Certified Public Accountant

A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification gives individuals an advantage in the job market.

CPA candidates must pass the Uniform CPA Examination to qualify for a CPA certificate and license to practice public accounting. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants administers the program. All CPA candidates take the same exam, however every state/jurisdiction has its own set of education and experience requirements candidates must meet.

CPAs have a license from their state’s Board of Accountancy, and almost all states require CPA candidates to have at least a bachelor’s degree. Many state require candidates complete 150 semester hours of college coursework to receive certification and pass a national, four-part exam from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Students generally obtain 120 hours through a bachelor’s degree program. Students seeking 150 semester hours of education, do not necessarily have to obtain a master’s degree. Students can meet the requirement at the undergraduate level or obtain a bachelor’s degree and complete some courses at the graduate level. Some schools provide a combined five-year bachelor’s and master’s degree program in accounting.

Prior to taking the certification examinations, state boards usually require accountants to have at least two years of work experience.

The law requires every accountant filing a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to be a CPA.

Certified Management Accountant Credential

The Association of Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business sponsor the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification. Professionals with the accounting certification show proficiency in financial analysis, strategic assessment, budgeting, and other skills.
